May 26, 1987
The Honorable Evelyn Murphy
Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts
Dear Lieutenant Governor Murphy:
As I mentioned to your staff in a recent telephone conversation, June 24, 1987, has been set aside for the re-enactment of the signing of a Treaty with the Micmac Indian Nation, which originally took place on July 19, 1776, in Watertown . The day's activities at the State House will afford recognition due the Micmac Nation, one of the United States first allies*, for their continuing friendship and military support. Materials are enclosed for your perusal.
The Micmac Indians played a crucial role in the American Revolution, as they held the balance of power on our northern and eastern frontiers. They remained firm to their commitments as set forth in the Watertown Treaty even in the face of great personal deprivation from the British Crown. Present-day History still resounds an active alliance with the Micmac Nation. Over six hundred warriors left their homelands of Nova Scotia , Canada , to volunteer their services in the United States military endeavors in Vietnam.
I am writing to request your participation in this historical re-enactment by representing Governor Dukakis and his predecessor George Washington by signing a duplicate Treaty with the Grand Council of the Micmac Nation on June 24th at 1:45 PM in Nurses Hail.
Presently, the following individuals have been invited to join with us for the re-enactment:
Secretary of State Michael Joseph Connolly;
Senate President William M. Bulger;
Speaker of the House George Keverian;
Reverend Peter Connolly, representing Cardinal Bernard Law; and, Mr. Al Whitaker, State Archivist.
It is my hope that your busy schedule will allow you to attend this historical ceremonial event, and would appreciate your response by June 1st so that we may finalize our program.
Sincerely yours,
MAUREEN CASEY
Assistant Public Relations Director for Speaker George Keverian
* actually, the United States' first military ally.
